While there is still much music to be rediscovered, it is rare to find works as beautiful as Dora Pejacevic’s Songs for Soprano and Orchestra. Largely neglected due to her gender, Pejacevic is probably the most talented composer Croatia has put forth, and is responsible for bringing the orchestral song and symphony to Croatian music. With these words The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle announced its concert entitled New, Rare, Exotic with works by Dora Pejačević (Two Butterflies Songs for Soprano and Orchestra), Zhou Tian (Concerto for Flute and Orchestra) and Manuel de Falla (Ballet Three-Cornered Hat) held on May 1, 2022 at the Carolina Theater (Fletcher Hall) in Durham (USA). The Chamber Orchestra of the Triangle is one of the best ensembles in the US state of North Carolina, known for its artistic excellence, performing a variety of musical styles and “adventurous” concert programs. The orchestra consists of about forty musicians from North Carolina, and is led by artistic director and conductor Lorenzo Muti with whom he holds six concerts a year and hosts some of the world’s most prominent musicians. Along with flutist Mimi Stillman, who is responsible for the world premiere of the Flute Concerto and Orchestra by American-Chinese composer Zhou Tian, Dora Pejačević’s Two Butterfly Songs was sung by American soprano LaToya Lain. Sheet music for the performance was provided by the Music Information Center of the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall.
