On Croatian Radio’s Paths of Croatian Music: The Zagreb Music Spring Festival

22.09.2025.

The Zagreb Music Spring Festival, held in May this year, was entirely dedicated to the composer, conductor, and pedagogue Stjepan Šulek. Over four days, the festival featured concerts, lectures, discussions, and a special exhibition on Šulek’s life and work, organized by the Music Information Centre of the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall.

On Friday, 26 September, starting at 11 a.m., the Croatian Radio programme Paths of Croatian Music will broadcast a feature from the festival, presenting the concerts of the Zagreb Philharmonic, Cantus Ensemble, and the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra. The broadcast will include performances of Šulek’s works – his Violin Concerto and Sixth Symphony – as well as the world premiere of a new piece by young composer Šimun-Čarli Botica, awarded in a special competition.

The programme features contributions from Dawid Runtz, Artistic Director of the Festival and Chief Conductor of the Zagreb Philharmonic; musicologist Nina Čalopek, Director of KDVL and author of the festival’s concept and programme content; musicologist Jelena Vuković, Head of the MIC at KDVL and programme advisor; violinist Goran Končar, President of the Stjepan Šulek Foundation; violinist Martin Draušnik; conductor Valentin Egel; and composer Šimun-Čarli Botica. The feature was recorded and prepared by programme editor Iva Lovrec Štefanović.
