About the music edition:
Composer and double bassist Dubravko Palanović (1977) graduated from Josip Novosel's double bass class in 1999 and Željko Brkanović's composition class in 2008, both at the Music Academy in Zagreb. He was a member of the Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra conducted by Claudio Abbado. He is currently a member (and founder) of the Acoustic Project Chamber Ensemble and a member of the Zagreb Philharmonics. Although his oeuvre is dominated by pieces written for chamber ensembles, he has also composed for orchestras His award-winning works include Doloroso for saxophone quartet (Maurice Ravel International Composition Competition, 2016). „I could say that some of my latest compositions are strongly influenced by jazz, which I have grown very fond of over time. The latest of such compositions is Doloroso for saxophone quartet (2011). The composition is very intimate and the name itself indicates its character – namely, I wanted to depict an atmosphere of melancholy, sorrow and pain. The initial theme is the foundation of the work. It is first presented in a slow tempo, but then changes and appears in a quick tempo. In the end, the slow tempo of the theme returns and motifs that seem like improvisation develop above the harmony. My intention was to create music that will be performed in a single breath, in which everything ends calmly, peacefully and with an air of melancholy after a storm of emotions.“ (Dubravko Palanović)
