About the music edition:
Juraj Stahuljak (1901 – 1975) attended the Croatian Music Institute Conservatory for five years taught by Ć. Junek, V. Rosenberg-Ružić, F. Lhotka, F. Dugan Sr, A. Dobronić and B. Bersa. In the bequest of Juraj Stahuljak, which includes works for piano, vocal lyrics, choirs, orchestral works, music-stage scores and music for the church, a particularly important place is taken by chamber music works. Here he was particularly able to express his composer’s creed, which he described in the following words: “I take my inspiration from several sources. The first and most important stimulus for writing music is given by the events that life brings, whether they are happy or whether they are sad, on different occasions. The latter, alas, prevail. The tragic death of my younger brother Vlatko while he was still very young gave me the inspiration for a cycle connected with memories of him. I often got inspiration when I was studying and playing works from the Classics and Romantics (primarily Croatian, but also Czech and Russian and so on). Croatian folk music from various areas is the basis of my musical art. In my works, I create the themes and their developments in the spirit of the music of the people. As for the technical side, I try to keep it at a high level, i.e. to show a mastery of the composer’s trade. As can be seen from everything, I am a Romantic. As far as form is concerned, I mostly do my compositions in Classical style – sonata form, song form, with a clear and comprehensive handling of the parts, and with a particularly emphasised expression of internal emotions (Romanticism, Impressionism).” (Juraj Stahuljak) The Vlatko Cycle, op. 14, consists of 18 movements distributed into 3 parts: Piano Quintet, Sonata for cello and piano, and the third part comprising a number of movements.
