Academician Davorin Kempf, (1947), composer, musicologist and music pedagogue, at the Academy of Music in Zagreb he graduated piano (S. Radić) in 1971, conducting (I. Gjadrov) in 1972, and composition (S. Šulek) in 1973. As a grantee of the German Academic Exchange Service he continued his studies in composition at the Hochschule für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Stuttgart (M. Kelemen, E. Karkoschka) during the 1975-76 academic year, and at the Musikhochschule Köln (M. Kagel, J. Blume, H. – U. Humpert) during the 1976-77 academic year. As a Fulbright grantee he completed graduate study in composition at the University of Iowa U.S.A. (D. Martin Jenni, K. Gaburo) in 1990, receiving a Master of Arts (Music) degree. In 1994 and 1997 he carried out his short-term studies/researches as a grantee of the German Academic Exchange Service at Technische Universität Berlin, Elektronisches Studio (F. Hein). He earned his Ph.D. degree at Freie Universität Berlin, Fachbereich Philosophie und Geisteswissenschaften (A. Riethmüller) in 2006. „I composed Surfaces and Colors for string orchestra in 2014 while serving as the first composer-in-residence to the Zagreb Philharmonics (during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons). The work was inspired by Piet Mondrian's paintings. It was premiered by the Zagreb Philharmonics conducted by Dian Tchobanov during the 29th Zagreb Music Biennale in 2017 at the Vatroslav Lisinski Concert Hall.“ (Davorin Kempf)
