About the music edition:
Boris Papandopulo (1906 – 1991) is one of the most distinctive Croatian musicians of the 20th century. Papandopulo also worked as music writer, journalist, reviewer, pianist and piano accompanist; however, he achieved the peaks of his career in music as a composer. His composing oeuvre is imposing – Papandopulo composed almost 500 opuses: with great success he created instrumental (orchestral, concertante, chamber and solo), vocal and instrumental (for solo voice and choir), music-stage and film music. In all these kinds and genres he left a string of anthology-piece compositions of great artistic value. The Third String Quartet, the Folk was composed in Zagreb in 1945. The four movements (Idyll, In the Circle Dance, Fiddler and Dance) are based on elements of folk music that the composer elaborates in a masterly manner making use of the composing and technical procedures of neo-Classicism, above all motif work and neo-Baroque imitation. The composition is graced by rustic acoustics and in places the harshness of the traditional material, although the methods and composerly procedures that Papandopulo applied in work with the musical substance are very sophisticated. The result of this is an uncommon vision of folk music refracted in the prism of the artist’s imagination and uncommon composing processes, which thus takes on completely new acoustic qualities.
